The Fifth Sun: How the Sun and the Moon Were Born at Teotihuacan
October 19, 2026 · 10 min · Audio in Spanish, English
Before there was day, the gods gathered at Teotihuacan to decide who would light the world. We listen, slowly, to how the Sun and the Moon were born, as told in the Nahua account preserved in the Florentine Codex.
One god volunteered first and hesitated four times before the fire; another, covered in sores and ignored by everyone, accepted and went in without turning back. It also explains why people speak of a fifth sun, following the Legend of the Suns, and where the rabbit on the Moon comes from.
